Historically, in early America, roving troupes of actors crossed the country by rail and river, bringing the latest music and plays to town after town. Nearly every community boasted a playhouse or opera house—centers of culture, social life, and shared imagination. This is the Beardstown Opera House in Beardstown, Illinois: a surviving jewel of that era.

The building is mid-reinnervation, its restoration both careful and reverent. Most recently they installed a new chandelier, a radiant centerpiece.
